Meet Lamiart
In the first installment of our Behind the Canvas series, we sit down with Lamiart β one of Alternus Gallery's most celebrated artists. Known for blending abstract expressionism with modern digital techniques, Lamiart's work has captivated collectors across Europe and beyond.
The Early Years
Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an artist?
"I can't remember a time when I wasn't making things. As a child, I was always drawing, painting, building β anything creative. But the moment I knew this was my calling came when I was about sixteen. I created a piece that genuinely surprised me β it expressed something I couldn't put into words. That feeling of discovering meaning through the creative act has driven me ever since."
Finding a Voice
Q: How would you describe your artistic style?
"I work at the intersection of emotion and structure. My pieces often start with a very deliberate compositional framework β geometric relationships, color theory, spatial balance. But then I allow intuition and spontaneity to take over. The tension between control and chaos is where the most interesting work happens."
Q: What mediums do you prefer?
"Primarily oil and acrylic on large-format canvas. There's something about the physicality of paint β the texture, the way it catches light β that digital tools can't fully replicate. That said, I do incorporate digital techniques in my planning process, using software to experiment with compositions before committing to canvas."
The Creative Process
Q: Walk us through how a typical piece comes to life.
"Every piece starts differently. Sometimes it's an image I can't get out of my head. Sometimes it's a color combination I noticed β in nature, in a building, even in food. I keep a visual journal on my phone, capturing anything that triggers a response.
Once I have a concept, I'll do rough digital sketches to explore compositions. When something clicks, I prepare the canvas and begin with broad, loose strokes to establish the energy. Then it's a conversation between me and the canvas β building up layers, scraping back, adding texture. A single piece might take anywhere from a week to several months."
On Inspiration
Q: What inspires your work?
"Nature is a constant source β not just landscapes, but the patterns and rhythms of natural systems. The way water flows, how light moves through clouds, the fractal geometry of plants. I'm also inspired by music, architecture, and human emotion. Art should make you feel something. If it doesn't, I've failed."
Advice for Emerging Artists
Q: What advice would you give to artists just starting out?
"Three things: First, create constantly. Volume leads to quality β you need to produce a lot of work to find your voice. Second, study the masters, but don't imitate them. Understand why their work resonates, then find your own way. Third, share your work. The fear of judgment never fully goes away, but the connection with an audience is incredibly rewarding."
What's Next
Q: Any upcoming projects?
"I'm working on a series exploring the relationship between natural and urban landscapes β how cities grow organically despite our attempts to impose order. It's the most ambitious project I've undertaken, and I'm excited to share it through Alternus."
